Back from Quite the Month

I've been a bit busy and my camera broke and life has had many ups with a couple of downs and to be honest, I needed a bit of break from blogging and thinking too deeply and have just been Being with my family and friends.

So after a month away from Hummingbird Haven, I thought I'd drop in to say hello and share what condition my condition is in. It's all good even when it seems like things are a bit crazier than normal.

August began with our FUNNR trip and then Broc and I celebrated our 10th anniversary. Probably as much fun in both of those events that people should have in one month but that was just the beginning...... Our beautiful friend, Quinn, from Rhode Island visited us for a couple of weeks. Brenna left to go back to college. We celebrated my mom's 85th birthday. After sharing our old green van for almost 4 years, we finally bought another car, We went to the Northeast Unschooling Conference in Boston. We made some new friends who are living in the co…

Happy 10

Image
Walking out of our front door to discover a limo! Some of our amazing friends surprised us with the limo that took us to a riverfront restaurant on Jacksonville, The Chart House. The entire evening was magical. Next time we're taking them all with us!

Quite simply, a decade of love, laughter, friendship, family and fun. Lots and lots of fun.

I couldn't ask for more.

Happy Anniversary to Us!!

Worth a Repeat.

Image
While reading through some old blog posts, I decided this one from July 23, 2009, was worth a repeat. So once more.. "Just a Clean Kitchen...Or is It?

We had one of our usually busy days yesterday. I'd gone to an early morning yoga class, put finishing touches on our bathroom remodel, evaluated and gave suggestions to a 10 year old girl who wanted some help with her speech, had a call from a dear friend from Texas that I miss so much and talked 1 1/2 hours, visited with another friend and her son who came by so that Brenna could help her daughter learn to throw on the pottery wheel, watched Logan play a bit of Rock Band, danced at Zumba, dropped Logan off at his cousin's house, picked up a few groceries for dinner, watched my favorite show, "So You Think You Can Dance", picked Logan up during a commercial break, talked to Broc who is in Maryland at sales meetings all week and watched Brenna putting some finishing touches on some pottery pieces.

It was 10:00 …

Bowl Envy....

Image
I seem to be posting about Brenna lately but it's because she has these cool things going on with an end result that can be photographed. Broc and I are in the middle of a bathroom remodel and Logan is busy with guitar and a new computer game which doesn't photograph well.

We're regrouping after our New Mexico trip and resting up for what will be a very busy few months. We excited about visitors and traveling to some unschooling events every month through November.

So.....Brenna threw this bowl on her wheel a few days ago and it's in the process of drying before she fires it. I think it's amazing! I spent most of 2008 going to pottery classes and throwing pots and the biggest thing I ever made that was centered was about the size of a salad bowl! I'm not sure how many pounds of clay she's used this summer but she has a gorgeous selection of pottery to show for it. The coolest thing is her enjoyment of the whole process, especially the wheel throwing.

I a…

Brenna's Very Cool Pottery on ETSY!

Brenna has an ETSY site where she is showcasing and selling some of her wheel-thrown pottery pieces. They are so amazing (says her mom but if I saw these pieces anywhere I would fall in love with them).

And she did such an amazing job photographing the pieces with her new camera!

Please check out her site and buy some of her cool pottery!

She is also doing commissioned pieces. Just contact her at her ETSY site or at

Random New Mexico Moments.....

Terry and Sharon Higgins 50th Anniversary Celebration
I'm just now posting some pictures of our trip to New Mexico and we've been home since June 29th! It was one of those" see everyone you can" and" pack in as much as you can" trips in a very short time. I didn't get to see as many friends and family that I had hoped to but we did see and do a lot in the time we were there!
One of the best parts of the trip was spending time with the Dodd family and I got home without any pictures! We visited with them a couple of afternoons where some of the family did interviews with Lee Stranahan for an unschooling movie and Logan and Brenna stayed a couple of nights there. It's always so fun to play with them...I just wish I had taken a couple of photos!

Here's a few random shots in no particular chronological order!
Broc took this of me and all five of our kids! Logan (16) Lindsay (16) Tyler (18) Me (old!)
Drew (20) and Brenna (19) …

Blog Interview

Here's theinterview I did for the blog, Homeschooling-Freedom and Fun for Your Family....

It's a series of questions that have been asked and answered by many people and I enjoyed not only answering the questions but reading others responses......

And in spite of the title, we occasionally do some things that aren't fun but usually the point of it is to get to something fun!

This unschooling life is a good fit for us........and I'm especially thankful for the friends we have made along the way. So thanks to You for being part of our lives...................

New Mexico Adventures...

View from Sandia Peak

We just returned from an amazing 12 day trip to New Mexico to visit family and friends and help celebrate Broc's parents' 50th wedding anniversary. That in itself was amazing!

I'll post pictures and thoughts about the trip soon but wanted to share one of our cool experiences while we were there. Broc and Brenna and Logan each participated in afternoon interviews with Lee Stranahan who is doing a documentary on unschooling. We spent time at Sandra Dodd's house and just had the best time visiting with the Dodds and Stranahan family. It is always such fun to be with our unschooling friends and especially nice to meet a new family and get to know them.

Broc and Brenna talked with Lee the first day we were there and on another day, Brenna joined Holly Dodd for an interview and Logan also participated. I had a great time visiting with Sandra and not having the pressure of being on cam…

Middle of the Night Scare.....

I couldn't sleep last night and about 3:30 I thought I heard a noise and I could see the light from the hall shining under my door. I decided that I'd get up and check and grabbed my glasses and stumbled out into the hall... Logan's door is right across from our room and as I opened our door, I could see him standing in the doorway of his room. I gasped and I'm sure completely scared him to death as he was not expecting me nor I am.

He looked to be blood splattered with a bandage and blood on his finger and his hair disheveled. I was so shocked and I immediately felt like I was going to throw up from the sight of all the blood but he was smiling and said..."It's okay, Mom.....

Apparently, he was doing the final stages of his Tuesday Vlog on Our Seven Cents and encouraged
me to go back to bed. I was too tired to do much else so I just gave him and hug and shook my head and went back to my room.

Times like this I realize that a lot goes on when I'm sleepin…

Glimpses of Summer so Far...

Image
Summer is in full swing here and is my favorite season for reasons that I'm sure go back to those years when summer was always carefree because of no school....I'm happy that my kids grew up knowing those lovely kinds of days all year round...

We're heading out to New Mexico next week for a 10 day vacation seeing family and friends and going to Broc's parent's 50th wedding anniversary celebration. We'll have all FIVE of our kids with us who are now ages 16 to 20 and I'm sure I'll come home with tons of pictures and stories to share.

So before all those adventures begin, I wanted to share a bit of our summer so far.....

The best part of this summer is having Brenna home from college....she is a whirlwind of laughter and light.....It's so fun having her home again....

I have flowers blooming all around....This is my favorite .....

Jason, Brenna's boyfriend, took this picture of Logan recently...I just love it...Logan has been helping me to become a be…

Logan's Our Seven Cents Vlog with Brenna!

Logan does a vlog every Tuesday with some of his unschooling friends. The vlog is on Youtube and is called Our Seven Cents. This week, Brenna is featured throwing a pot on her wheel in our home studio.....Just wanted to share it here ....Brenna on Logan's Vlog...

Enjoy!!

Night Out on the Town.....

Image
Brenna and Logan both got haircuts at Hair Peace.....Brenna didn't mind a picture or two...Logan not so much :-)
Brenna's boyfriend, Jason, was visiting from Orlando for a couple of days so we thought we'd go out to dinner and show him a bit of downtown Jacksonville. My plan was to drive downtown and take the River Taxi across to American Cafe and then to ride the monorail back across the river..

.
We found the bench where Broc had proposed to me many years ago...a perfect place for a couple of pictures.....
I don't think Broc wanted any more proposing on this bench........

Every year, a group of different animals are painted by local artists and displayed all over town for several months before they are auctioned off for charity...This year was the Turtle year and Logan found one to hug.....

Waiting for the River Taxi...

Things were still going smoothly at dinner....Logan's friend Trevor joined us and we really enjoyed sitting by the river as the sun was setting......…

How we spent our Memorial Day Weekend.....

Image
We moved into this house 3 1/2 years ago and it needed painting then! It was trimmed in my least favorite shade of green and had patches of mold and primer and needed a serious makeover.

A couple of weeks ago, we decided that with a 3 day weekend coming up, it was time....

Broc powerwashed it on Saturday........and to the rescue all the way from South Carolina came...

Painter Extraordinaire ...Cameron Lovejoy!!!

Brenna helped out for awhile...at least long enough for a photo opportunity....
Broc and Cameron painted all day Sunday and Monday and by Monday evening we were ready for a Memorial Day party ...

Duncan Lovejoy had been visiting us for a few days and was very happy to have his brother join us....

During the evening, I discovered my first RED RIPE STRAWBERRY....plant courtesy of Kelly Lovejoy :-)

Brenna took a turn in the hammock.......

The house is so pretty now....colors I love.....and it was so fun having Cameron with us for the weekend. He makes house calls, so if anyone needs a…

Random Catch Up!

Image
We've been happy and busy with lots of visitors and comings and goings and I haven't taken the time to blog in awhile. I have been taking pictures so I chose a few to share some of our recent doings.....

My brother, Skip, my niece, Kristle and my nephew, Ethan, came for a visit from New Mexico so we had many family gatherings for a couple of weeks..Here's Brenna doing a Henna tattoo on Kristle's foot.

Skip turned 64 while he was here and on his birthday some of us went to Deleon Springs for the afternoon...Skip played his guitar in the park (and yes we all sang.."Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm 64?") and people came by and dropped money in his guitar which was funny to us all except my mom, who found it a bit embarrassing. Here she is with Kristle doing a birthday toast to Skip. An added note here....my mom is 84 and drives herself all around town....is still taking classes learning Spanish and now French as well as going to the po…
