Birthday Moon Light.....

Image
It's no secret in my family that I love any reason to have a celebration.  I especially love birthday ones and this last week was mine! Broc had to be out of town for my birthday (and Brenna is at the Writer's Retreat in Colorado) so the three of us went out for dinner on Sunday night.
On Monday, we met up with friends at Dobra Tea in downtown Asheville for tea and snacks. It's my new favorite place with little rooms with pillows to sit on and and so many teas and goodies to choose from.

The moon was rising and the teens all headed home so Genie, Christine and I walked over to dinner at Zambras which is my favorite Asheville Tapas restaurant.......

When I arrived home a few hours later, Logan and his friends were making dinner and I was greeted with a sweet birthday sign, birthday doughnuts and a lovely rendition of Happy Birthday!

Happy Day. Happy Birthday. Happy Me.

Fall ARGH

Image
Every Spring and Fall for a few years,  unschooling families have been gathering in the mountains of Tennessee for the Autodidact Radical Gathering of Homeschoolers which is mostly just known as ARGH.  It's a few days of magic and fun and this fall was no exception.

Occupy October :)

Lots of comings and goings from our home recently.  I love the homecomings most of all but appreciate and celebrate the goings because I know that they involve adventure and learning opportunities. So here's a bit about what's up with both the kids recently....

Logan traveled up to New Hampshire for Not Back to School Camp in September and drove for the first time instead of flying.  He was accompanied by his girlfriend, Josie, and they camped and also stayed with friends along their route.  Then a couple of weeks ago, he attended the ZTC Camp which was held in downtown Asheville.  Brenna, as well as several friends, also particpated in the weekend event and we happily hosted a couple of the attendees who needed a place to stay before it began.  From my perspective, ZTC Camp was a huge success and both my kids as well as some of the other young adults attending gave it glowing reviews.

Brenna came home towards the end of September after traveling/working/apprenticing out we…

Games....

Brenna and Logan are both home at the same time for a few more days.  Tonight, they are both here with their significant others playing Settlers of Catan and I'm lucky enough to be close by and to feel the sweetness of their togetherness.

Over the years, we have cycled through tons of games.  From those Hi-Ho Cherry-O days, Candyland, Go Fish, ........and on to Checkers and Monopoly and summers of Charades.  Phase 10, Yahtzee, Chess, and Scrabble, .....Pictionary and Taboo........Rummikub.....Apples to Apples and Bananagrams...

One summer we played endless Poker and I'm sure there are games that I've forgotten.  Some of our best times together as a family have been playing games.  I listen tonight and smile as I hear my kids teasing each other and laughing.....

Remembering those years when I played with my siblings and friends when my parents chose to not always join in....

I understand why now.  Perhaps they wanted to just have a few moments to enjoy the laughter, the sw…

Finding the Color.....

Even if something is left undone, everyone must take time to sit still and watch the leaves turn." ~Elizabeth Lawrence

Broc and I went for a hike on Sunday up off the Blue Ridge Parkway.  This is our second fall here in the mountains and I'm able to enjoy more of it all since we're finally settled in.  I also realize now how quickly these leaves will be gone.  The parallel to my life is not lost on me but I'm choosing to treasure every season. I'll miss this one but I know that next will be full of new surprises and adventures and I'll find the color there also.

5000 Miles....Headed Home

Image
This is one of my favorite parts of the drive back into Albuquerque and I took these while driving!  After 4000 plus miles, I definitely was getting better at capturing some shots while in motion.

The Sandia Mountains just as I was coming over the hill west of the city.....

My brother, Skip, played one Sunday afternoon at this Brew Pub.  I couldn't  resist this photo of the Hummingbird drinking beer.

This is Tessa, Kristle's niece, who spent the afternoon with us and completely won my heart.

Broc's parents, Terry and Sharon, met up with us in the afternoon for a visit and to listen to some music. Skip even played one of Sharon's favorite songs for her!

My brother, Skip and me.  I love listening to him play and enjoyed the whole gorgeous afternoon.

I left before dawn the next morning and drove for two and a half days while listening and singing to every bit of music that I brought with me. The entire trip was Fabulous! The…

More Road Tripping.....Northwestern New Mexico.....

Image
I'm catching up with the highlights of my road trip out west now that I'm home again.....After leaving California, I made one last stop at an In-N-Out Burger in Yuma, Arizona.  While I've been an on- and- off again vegetarian for years,  I was definitely not a vegetarian on this trip after tasting a hamburger from this place.  We don't have them on the East Coast but they are definitely the best fast food burgers I've ever tasted.

I drove back through Phoenix and Flagstaff and on up to the Four Corners area of New Mexico.  First stop was in Farmington where I stayed with my friend Bill.  We met up with his kids and grandkids for dinner and here he is with his newest 5 week old grandaughter and oldest grandson.  We've been friends a LONG time!  I also stayed with Brenna and Logan's grandparents a couple of nights, drove around my old home town of Bloomfield and saw the house where I grew up, had coffee with other long ago friends at Durango Joes and then v…
